ProduSafe QX antimicrobial nanocoating proven effective

ProduSafe QX is a new antimicrobial nanocoating containing titanium dioxide (TiO2) that guarantees clean and safe tanks, silos, spray dryers and food production surfaces. Using what is known as the ‘chicken filet test’, Dutch research institute TNO has proven that the active ingredient in ProduSafe QX does not migrate into food products. These test results pave the way for the manufacturer to apply for ‘food-grade’ status at EFSA.

ProduSafe QX is suitable for any company looking to ensure optimum hygiene and reduce the risk of microbial contamination, as are most companies in the food and beverage industry. The coating consists of TiO2 nanoparticles in an aqueous suspension. Under the influence of UV light, titanium dioxide releases oxygen free radicals that eliminate bacteria, viruses and fungi.

Effectiveness
The antimicrobial coating proved effective on the 11 microorganisms TNO tested for. Fungal spores were resistant to the coating’s antimicrobial effect, but after hatching the fungi were killed by the coating. Cleaning did not affect the coating’s effectiveness.

The TiO2 particles are so small they permanently adhere to and become part of the surface’s crystalline structure. Because the particles are so small, the active surface is large. The coating makes the food contact surface highly hydrophilic, so the water forms a smooth film on the surface. Organic material is broken down from the surface up. Hence, it has difficulty attaching to the surface and is easy to rinse off. The coating disappears only through wear and tear.

Applications
ProduSafe QX can be used on any type of surface, including smooth surfaces like stainless steel, glass and plastics. The coating is effective only if exposed to enough UV light. Fluorescent or LED lighting is not sufficient. The coating increases general hygiene and can help reduce the number of rejects and product recalls. Although invisible, it remains effective for a long time. It is a sustainable alternative for detergents and disinfectants such as chlorine and alcohol. Applying it to the surface is a specialist’s job.

The nanocoating can also be used in industries other than the food and beverage industry. The hospitality, healthcare and transportation industries could also benefit.
